Todd Blake Vewers Danish-American minimalist modern architect

About Todd Verwers

Todd Blake Verwers  AIA MAA is a Scandinavian-American architect with strong connections to Denmark and the Danish design tradition.  Trained in the Nordic design tradition at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, his decidedly Scandinavian approach to design has evolved to create work characterized by timeless simplicity, refined elegance, and careful refinement of detail.

Licensed in both California and Denmark, Todd is an architect with extensive international experience over a broad range of project types.  His portfolio of work, much of which has been published widely in international journals and books, is often associated with the subtle aesthetic qualities of Japanese and Danish minimalism.

In his former capacity of adjunct professor at the California College of the Arts, Todd lectured widely on the work of Danish minimalist architect Arne Jacobsen, in whose successor firm he was employed for nine years.  He is also much inspired by the work of architects Mies van der Rohe, Tadao Ando, Luis Barragan, Richard Neutra, and John Pawson.  Early commissions included various residential remodeling and addition projects for European and American clients.  Subsequent projects have spanned from new houses to a variety of office and retail commissions.  In collaboration with other architects, Todd has also developed large-scale cultural, institutional, commercial, and infrastructure projects around the globe.

"In addition to addressing the always critical matters of client program and budget, I strive to imbue my work with a sense of extraordinary discipline, grace, and simplicity.  Architecture as manifested in form and space has the potential of combining the sacred with the everyday.  I believe a building or space must be poetic as well as rational, and it is the potential of evoking a transcendent or profound emotional response in those who experience my work which fascinates and drives me.

I adhere to a holistic approach to design, and am therefore intimately involved with each project from conceptual design through construction – where the primary objective is the making of timeless architecture, while providing functional and economical design solutions for my clients."

Residential

“My wife Christine and I recently purchased the property and we moved in just last week. We had been looking for a new home in San Francisco for almost a year now.

When we visited during the open house, the thought of possibly owning a home like this was a dream come true for us. Given our style of living, and appreciation for fine detailing and aesthetics, we feel this home is close to perfect for us. It was worth the wait to be able to find such a remarkable and beautiful property.

Having lived in loft condos in Potrero Hill and Dogpatch for the last 14 years, this is an amazing upgrade for us. We are very pleased to be able to be the next stewards of this great modern home that you redeveloped.

It's a special home. We love every minute we spend here.”

"I'm Danish living in California.   At the moment I am working with Todd Verwers for the third time - a complete remodel of my home in Palm Springs. I have only one word to say about Mr. TV:  Genius !!   Oh... and one more thing... he is nicest person you will ever want to meet.

We had 12 people for a cocktail party last night. All doors open, fire places going, the house lit like a jewel box, people moving in and out, the flow fantastic because of……. YOU!

I love my house.

KH and a kiss from the boys in 454."

"I'm excited to announce that you've been named Best of HomeGuide in 2020. Congratulations!

We looked at dozens of other pros in your area, scored you on more than 10 variables, and hand picked you to be part of the program.  This is no small feat. In fact, the Best of HomeGuide pros make up less than six percent of all HomeGuide professionals."

"Working directly with Todd Verwers as architect on two of our facilities projects in Denmark was a real pleasure.  He tailored his exceptional designs to our needs and corporate workplace culture, and his professionalism and attention to detail was instrumental in the successful completion of these projects on schedule and within budget.

Furthermore, his ability to converse fluently in Danish helped with some of the communication challenges we faced during the project calls and in the field."

"Claresco is a small software firm that began it's life in a basement and was operating in a carriage-house.  When it came time for real office space, we engaged Todd early in the process to help us identify suitable property, then turn that property into the office space of our dreams.  Instead of hiding our server farm he made it the focal point of the space: a miniature 4-rack Class-A server facility occupies a tall glass column.  Small, dark, and cramped became light, open and expansive.  The employees love it.

We knew we chose well when the original builder of the space chose our office to photograph and asked for Todd's contact information.  Working with Todd was easy; I believe he truly heard what we wanted and far exceeded our expectations.  When the bank created last-minute funding challenges, Todd worked with us to refine the work into a phased approach so that we could complete portions of it later without compromising the original vision.

As we've worked in the space, we've also found it quite flexible: the infrequently used conference room and reception desk gave way to a fully equipped gym for the employees."
